how do you start with graphite drawing? Do you use grids to align parts of the drawing?

Hey, I watched the video and it was really interesting. Wonderful job! I love watching the process of different artists, that is the best part (to me). Just wondering about the gray canvas that you use, if it is actually canvas or what? I usually just gesso the entire thing and go. I never considered drawing before I painted either, I'll try it sometime. :) Thanks for the inspiration!
